Record production of oil and gas in Kazakhstan in 2018
ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Record volume of oil and gas was produced in Kazakhstan in 2018, the Kazinform correspondent reports.
“2018 was a record year for the fuel and energy sector of the country. More than 90 million tons of oil and more than 55 billion cubic meters of gas were produced,” said Sabit Nurlybay, Vice-Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the presentation of the environmental responsibility openness rating of Kazakh oil and gas companies. In 2017, oil production reached KZT 86.2 million, which is 10.5% higher than previous year. This increase in oil production allowed the country to achieve 4% GDP growth for the year. As noted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia, the Creon Group and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), such impressive indicators should provide for appropriate measures to reduce the environmental impact. In this regard, the results of second environmental responsibility openness rating of Kazakh oil and gas companies in 2018 were announced. Vice-Minister S. Nurlybay also reminded that the ministry has started updating the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. “The amendments to the Environmental Code will include the implementation of strategic environmental assessment. It is very important area. We are going to build fourth refinery so we need to know how it will affect the country's environment, as well as the environment of nearby regions,” he explained. In addition, the updated code provides for stringent measures against violators for repeated violation of environmental legislation. This will help create favorable conditions for greening the national economy as a whole.
